We all start out in business with great dreams of what we’ll create. Along the way, we find out that it’s a lot more challenging than we thought, particularly if we’re corporate escapees used to working hard, sure, and getting paid for it. In your own business you’re probably working twice as hard for a lower salary, particularly in the early years.
Here’s what I’ve discovered, and perhaps you have too. Running your own business is the most impactful personal development programme you’ll ever engage in. In the tough times, it’s messy, raw, uncertain and volatile. We take a permanent address outside our comfort zone and go for it as best we can. Those tough times make the successes so much sweeter.
Regardless of how long we’ve been in business and how far we’ve progressed along our chosen business model, we will experience challenges so very different to those we confronted in the employed world.
None of us gets it right all the time. Things may fall between the cracks because we don’t have the right systems. We may leave money on the table because promoting our offering is not a natural capability. We may change direction, going after the shiny new object in our bid to become financially sustainable. We may have challenges with hiring and keeping the right staff, and inspiring them to go above and beyond. Branding may not be a strength, so we don’t put out a consistent message that builds our credibility in the marketplace.
Now the question. Is that what you’re getting? How much do you want those outcomes? What are you willing to do to become the kind of business you aspire to?
You see, it all starts with Leadership. How you’re leading your business (even if it’s just you), how you’re managing yourself and those you interact with to get the important work done. Self-leadership is the starting point of great leadership.
If you’re curious and want to know more, or if you already recognise you want to take some action, read on.
Great businesses start with Purpose: finding out who they are, what they care about. Purpose used to be considered soft and fluffy. Now, though, there are significant business cases that prove businesses who start with Purpose deliver stronger brands and significantly higher profitability.
Perhaps by now you have an understanding of what Purpose is all about and why it’s being hailed as the mother of all business drivers. You may have read articles in HBR, Forbes and other business magazines talking about the results that companies achieve when they start with Purpose. You may have seen Simon Sinek share the story of the Wright Brothers on TED. Let me lay it out for you.
The best way to identify the steps between where you are now and where you see your business at some defined point in the future is to compare with a model of best practice to deliver high performance. This is an indication only as I don’t as yet know what business you’re in.
Why not take 10 minutes and answer some questions about your business. The questions themselves may spark some ideas for you. After completing the questionnaire, you will receive an email giving you the results and a description of where your business is. You can then follow the link provided in the email to identify the broad strategies that will take you to the next level in your business development.
If you completed the Best practice Health Check or if you simply know that there are more opportunities for your business than you’re currently enjoying, why not talk with us about how we may be of service in helping you reach your goals. We can have a short obligation-free conversation to explore possibilities. Then, if you want to work with us, we make it as easy as we can. Our services come in a variety of ways, and we’re sure one will suit you.

Suzanne helped us understand and eliminate the exploding frogs inside our organisation. Through training and facilitated processes to identify, articulate and live by our Purpose, Vision and Values, a cultural change programme and a business strategy programme for our department heads, Suzanne provided us with valuable tools that have improved our business practices and enhanced our bottom line.
Suzanne has been instrumental in introducing a higher level of leadership, sophistication and discipline into our business which directly contribute to our ongoing success. Her expertise and communication skills have made her a valuable resource for Dynapac Australia. I look forward to continuing our working relationship.
This was one of the most significant leadership development courses I have attended. It has brought into sharper focus previous learnings and added depth
Thank you, thank you, thank you for coaching me. I wouldn’t have had the courage – or even the thought really – to step up as a manager if it weren’t for you and the work we’ve done together. I’m now managing 3 teams. I realise I’m in new territory now – you’re the best compass around!
Suzanne presents with a heartfelt passion for Authenticity and engages with the audience very well on a topic of great interest to any crowd. Her delivery was a mix of humorous, professional and very authentic
Your presentation was, hands-down, one of the most consummate performances I have seen … ever! Purposeful, masterful, to the point, engaging and flexible. Thank you.
Of all the courses I have done over all the years, this has clearly been the most relevant and useful. Thank you very much for your insights. I have benefited greatly.
I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your session. A thoroughly polished performance which I think would have resonated with many in the audience – even if some mightn’t like to admit it!
A liberating experience that has opened my eyes to what I want from my future, purpose and vision. This has given me the strength to keep going and persist to get what I deserve. Building EQ and ER to assist in dealing with issues that arise.
