Do you want more out of your business than you’re currently getting?

We all start out in business with great dreams of what we’ll create. Along the way, we find out that it’s a lot more challenging than we thought, particularly if we’re corporate escapees used to working hard, sure, and getting paid for it. In your own business you’re probably working twice as hard for a lower salary, particularly in the early years.

Here’s what I’ve discovered, and perhaps you have too. Running your own business is the most impactful personal development programme you’ll ever engage in. In the tough times, it’s messy, raw, uncertain and volatile. We take a permanent address outside our comfort zone and go for it as best we can.  Those tough times make the successes so much sweeter.

Regardless of how long we’ve been in business and how far we’ve progressed along our chosen business model, we will experience challenges so very different to those we confronted in the employed world.

None of us gets it right all the time. Things may fall between the cracks because we don’t have the right systems.  We may leave money on the table because promoting our offering is not a natural capability. We may change direction, going after the shiny new object in our bid to become financially sustainable. We may have challenges with hiring and keeping the right staff, and inspiring them to go above and beyond. Branding may not be a strength, so we don’t put out a consistent message that builds our credibility in the marketplace.

Ask yourself: What do I want from my business?

Now the question. Is that what you’re getting? How much do you want those outcomes? What are you willing to do to become the kind of business you aspire to?

You see, it all starts with Leadership. How you’re leading your business (even if it’s just you), how you’re managing yourself and those you interact with to get the important work done. Self-leadership is the starting point of great leadership.

Find out what the successful and sustainable businesses know!

Great businesses start with Purpose: finding out who they are, what they care about. Purpose used to be considered soft and fluffy. Now, though, there are significant business cases that prove businesses who start with Purpose deliver stronger brands and significantly higher profitability.

Perhaps by now you have an understanding of what Purpose is all about and why it’s being hailed as the mother of all business drivers.
